There are plenty of places to spend money on an audio system. Your speakers. Your amplifier. Your turntable. Room treatment. Better placement. More records. A comfortable chair. Maybe a nice bottle of something to drink while you actually listen to the thing.
A $1,500 USB cable probably shouldn’t be high on the list.
A cable needs to do its job correctly. It needs the appropriate gauge, shielding, connectors, impedance, length and construction for whatever you’re asking it to do. After that, things get murkier.
There is a big difference between saying you should use the right cable and saying a $2,000 cable will reveal layers of harmonic information you’ve never heard before. One of those is engineering. The other one needs a pretty serious explanation.
Speaker wire has a remarkably boring job: carry electrical current from your amplifier to your speakers. That’s good news, because for most normal home audio installations, good-quality copper cable of an appropriate gauge is exactly what you need.
If you’re running five feet from an integrated amp to a bookshelf speaker, this isn’t a NASA project. If you’re running 75 feet through a wall to a difficult speaker load, then resistance, gauge, installation rating and termination deserve more attention.
That distinction tends to get lost. The application matters. The price tag doesn’t automatically tell you anything.
We’d much rather see you spend $100 on sensible speaker cable and put the other $900 toward better speakers than reverse those numbers. Every time.
USB and HDMI cables are particular favorites of the audiophile-industrial complex. Digital transmission isn’t magic. The goal is to reliably transmit data according to the required standard.
That doesn’t mean every cable is identical. Poorly made cables exist. Extremely long runs can create problems. Higher-bandwidth HDMI standards require cables capable of handling that bandwidth, and USB implementations can sometimes have electrical-noise considerations depending on the equipment involved.
But once the connection is working properly, spending ten times more doesn’t mean you’re getting ten times more music. A $400 USB cable doesn’t suddenly make Miles Davis play harder.

There are absolutely situations where cable choice deserves more attention. Long cable runs make resistance and signal integrity more relevant. Turntables are another good example because phono cartridges operate at extremely low signal levels, and cable capacitance can interact with certain cartridges.
Balanced cables also matter in the right context. In studios, installations and systems with longer runs, properly designed balanced connections can help reject noise. Build quality matters too, especially if you’re constantly plugging and unplugging equipment. Good connectors, durable jackets and proper strain relief are worth paying for.
And if a cable is going inside a wall, use something properly rated for the application. That’s less about audiophile performance and more about doing the job correctly.
There’s also nothing wrong with caring about how a cable looks. If you spent years building a beautiful listening room and want braided cables with machined connectors, buy them. Objects can be enjoyable because they’re well made and nice to look at.
Just understand what you’re paying for.
We don’t hate expensive things. Vigilant Audio sells expensive audio equipment. There are beautifully engineered amplifiers, speakers and turntables that cost a lot of money because they’re difficult to design, difficult to manufacture and capable of doing extraordinary things.
The same can be true of a beautifully made cable. If you appreciate the materials, craftsmanship and aesthetics, there’s nothing wrong with spending money on one.
The bullshit starts when luxury gets disguised as necessity.
Buying a cable because you love the way it’s made is completely different from being told you can’t hear what your speakers are capable of until you spend 15% of the system price on cables. You do not need to follow some arbitrary cable-to-system-cost ratio.
If you’ve got another $1,000 burning a hole in your pocket, we’d start somewhere else.
Move your speakers around. Seriously. Try changing their distance from the front wall. Adjust toe-in. Move your listening position. Deal with a nasty room reflection. Add a rug. Get the speakers onto proper stands.
Those changes can have a meaningful impact on what you hear, and some of them cost nothing.
If you still want to spend money, put it toward the parts of the system responsible for actually turning electricity into sound. Speakers make a huge difference. The room makes a huge difference. Speaker placement makes a huge difference. Your source and amplification can make a difference too.
Your $800 power cord? We’re comfortable putting that farther down the list.
That’s basically our advice.
Buy cables from a reputable company. Make sure they’re appropriate for your equipment. Don’t buy something so poorly constructed that the connector falls off in six months.
Then plug everything in, put on an album you love, and forget the cables exist.
That’s what they’re supposed to let you do.
